Pre -K and Kindergarten worked with wire
this week. They learned that wire is a metal
and comes from the earth(as did the clay they used).
it was cool at the start, but warmed up as their hands
bent it. They explored the wire with their hands, bending
and watching it change shapes. They then used a dowel
rod or pencil to wrap the wire and saw that it made a
spiral shape or spring. Their vocabulary is great. they always
surprise me with what they know. Then came the real fun:using
needle nose pliers. They saw how it helped them bend the
wire more exacting than their hands. We also watched a short
video with Alexander Calder performing his wire based
circus sculpture.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6jwnu8Izy0
We looked at a book about his work called"Roar".
